MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will develop a state-wide turfgrass extension program that addresses priority needs of the turfgrass industry and complements the state-wide horticultural extension effort. Extension duties include the development of educational programs to support the turfgrass industry, delivered through workshops, publications, websites and county-level extension professionals; in-service training for county-level extension professionals; and direct outreach to turfgrass professionals. Specifics include assisting individuals from all facets of the Kansas turfgrass industry with turfgrass-related problems, managing a turfgrass information website, cooperating with agents and others in development and delivery of programs, and taking a lead role in organizing the annual turfgrass conference and field day. Collaboration and rapport with turfgrass industry leadership is essential.
The incumbent will develop an applied research program to address industry needs and will publish results in scientific and popular venues. Collaborative research projects will be expected with horticulture and related discipline faculty members located at the K-State Research and Extension Center in Olathe, the John C. Pair Horticulture Center in Haysville, and in Manhattan. The incumbent is expected to obtain extramural grant support for research and extension, and to participate in all facets of graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research; and publishing the results with his/her graduate students. Scholarly activity, defined as creative, intellectual work, such as extension program development, peer-reviewed publications and collaborative activities that are validated by peers and communicated, is expected.
