Fruit & Vegetable Production Specialization  pdf

Students combine interests in organic, sustainable, and conventional fruit and vegetable production with courses in business management.  Employment opportunities include owner or manager of a fruit or vegetable farm; organic farmer; or work with a non-profit organization in the new area of urban and community gardening. Students would also be qualified to be field representatives for processing, agricultural input suppliers, or equipment companies; or as managers, buyers, field representatives, or brokers/marketing representatives.  Our new student educational farm allows students to get hands-on experience in many of these areas in addition to course-work and field trips.

Greenhouse & Nursery Management Specialization   pdf

An education combining horticulture and business courses prepares students for opportunities in propagation and production of potted crops, bedding plants, trees and shrubs, and cut flowers. Many students obtain positions as greenhouse, nursery, or garden center managers or with allied trades such as seed breeding companies, supply firms, research greenhouses, retail floral shops, and wholesale brokers.

Horticulture Science Specialization   pdf

This option is intended for students who plan to pursue a graduate degree. Universities, state and federal agencies, and industries need trained scientists who can teach, conduct research, and communicate research findings to the public to increase the production and effective use of horticultural products. Many who earn the master of science degree work as consultants, technical representatives, community college instructors, and county extension agents. Those earning a doctorate degree work at universities, the USDA, and research and development for industry firms.

Landscape Design Specialization   pdf

This field prepares students with artistic and design abilities to create functional and sustainable landscape environments. Landscape designers are sought by garden centers, botanical gardens, landscape maintenance and installation firms, nurseries, and governmental bodies. Private consulting is also a possibility. Many jobs involve consumer relations and retail sales.

Opportunities abound in residential and commercial landscape care, from installation through maintenance of landscape environments. This specialization is ideal for people who enjoy being outdoors and working with a wide variety of plants, including tree and shrub care, flower bed installation, trouble-shooting irrigation systems, and landscape construction projects.

Sports Turf Operations Management Specialization  pdf

This option prepares students for rewarding careers with professional sports organizations, school districts, colleges and university grounds departments, and municipal park and recreation departments. Coursework in business, communications, hospitality management, and sports turf management, along with two internships, provides graduates the background to manage the total sports facility operation.

Students are prepared to administer a public horticultural facility, including botanical gardens, conservatories, and arboreta. Developing educational programs, fund-raising, and interacting with the public are all components of this dynamic field.

Horticultural Therapy Specialization  pdf 

Horticultural therapy is a career for those who enjoy working with special people and sharing their love of gardening. K-State is the only university offering the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D.; whose graduates are employed in medical hospitals, correctional programs, schools, retirement and skilled care facilities, community-based programs, vocational training centers, and/or work as private consultants. Undergraduates complete courses in agricultural and horticultural sciences, social and behavioral sciences, business, and professional electives, as well as a 6-month internship. Golf Course Management Specialization  pdf

This program is designed to prepare the next generation of golf course superintendents and managers. The unique curriculum combines courses in business, communications, hospitality, and turf management, along with two internships. Graduates are employed by golf courses and golf clubs all over the U.S. and world, as well as in industries allied to golf.
